Week 21- Just updates
Hey, so nothing really happened again this week, it was mainly just the normal schedule of going to school, going to clubs, and going to the library. One exciting thing is that results from the Libertyville competition came back and I got first place in Wright Stuff. I didn't medal in any of my other events though, but that's fine and we have another one coming up next week. So far the semester has been going well, it's been a bit stressful at times and I do feel a bit burnt out sometimes but it's going fine. Maybe a bit burnt out isn't the right thing to say because this weekend I barely did anything. Anyways one highlight was that we got a lot of school and a bunch of people got mad at our superintendent for not cancelling school.
Our superintendent now is Dr. Adrian Talley who replaced the old superintendent Karen Sullivan after she retired after my freshman year. One of the main points that he made is that he used to live in Maine, 2 miles off of the Canadian border and experienced this kind of weather before. However, he didn't cancel school for about 8 inches of snow, which resulted in many people not coming to school and many people getting into accidents. Lots of people are angry at him for making students go through this even though our district made online learning a viable option for these kinds of things. In the end, he eventually cancelled all after school activities which really didn't make a difference to his reputation, or even made it worse. 8th grade orientation was also supposed to be that night but was also cancelled. I rambled a lot but I guess the main point is that he made us go to school in unsafe conditions which caused accidents and lots of people not go to school. This resulted in people that didn't go to miss out on a day of learning since teachers couldn't really give e-learning things because some people still went to school. This is pretty bad since AP tests can't be moved back and he essentially just wasted a day.
I don't know, there has been a lot of backlash and I'm personally with it. I don't think he made the right choice at all, and seems to just be flaunting his power around after people begged him to cancel school. It doesn't help knowing that he makes a quarter million a year by making these kinds of decisions. But I don't think there's anything we can do about it now except hope he has learned what to do in the future. I think that's mostly all for this week, stay safe everyone!
